2026 federal poverty guidelines by household size
HHS publishes the poverty guidelines each January. The 2026 guidelines took effect on January 15, 2026 (91 FR, document 2026-00755). They are the numbers Medicaid, CHIP, the 2027 Marketplace subsidies and many other programs use to set income limits.
| People in household | 48 states and DC | Alaska | Hawaii |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $15,960 | $19,950 | $18,360 |
| 2 | $21,640 | $27,050 | $24,890 |
| 3 | $27,320 | $34,150 | $31,420 |
| 4 | $33,000 | $41,250 | $37,950 |
| 5 | $38,680 | $48,350 | $44,480 |
| 6 | $44,360 | $55,450 | $51,010 |
| 7 | $50,040 | $62,550 | $57,540 |
| 8 | $55,720 | $69,650 | $64,070 |
| Each additional person | $5,680 | $7,100 | $6,530 |
The 2025 guidelines, which still apply to 2026 Marketplace coverage, were $15,650 plus $5,500 per extra person in the 48 states and DC, $19,550 plus $6,880 in Alaska and $17,990 plus $6,330 in Hawaii (90 FR 5917). Switch the guideline year in the calculator to see them.
Which percentages of the poverty level matter
Medicaid for adults in expansion states goes up to 133% of the poverty level plus a 5 percentage point income disregard, which is why the limit is usually quoted as 138%: $22,025 for one person and $45,540 for a family of four in 2026. The Marketplace premium tax credit covers household incomes from 100% to 400% of the poverty level, with the expected contribution rising at 133%, 150%, 200%, 250% and 300%; above 400% there is no credit. The ACA subsidy calculator turns those bands into a monthly credit.
Example: a family of four in Texas with $50,000 of income is at 151% of the 2026 poverty level ($50,000 divided by $33,000 is 1.515, and Form 8962 drops the decimals). They are above the 138% Medicaid line ($45,540) and well under the 400% line ($132,000).
Which year's guidelines apply to you
Marketplace coverage uses the guidelines in effect on the first day of its open enrollment: coverage for 2027 (open enrollment opened November 1, 2026) uses the 2026 guidelines, and coverage for 2026 uses the 2025 guidelines. Medicaid and most other programs switch to the new guidelines when they are published, or on a date the program sets.
Income for Medicaid and the Marketplace is modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), before tax: adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest, nontaxable Social Security and excluded foreign income. The household is the people on your tax return: you, your spouse and your dependents. The Census Bureau's poverty thresholds, used for statistics, are a different set of numbers.
